Government woes threaten to deepen economic crisis

The headlines are everywhere. The state of New Mexico has frozen hiring and taken other measures to clip $200 million from the current fiscal-year budget to avoid a deficit. The Albuquerque mayor is leaving 140 jobs unfilled to trim $20 million from the city’s budget. The Gadsden Independent School District in southern New Mexico is shifting its use of $3.9 million in state funds — a stopgap measure to avoid immediately firing 98 employees and making other cuts. But Gadsden still has to figure

New Mexico’s improbable dragon slayer

Karen Giannini narrowly defeated State Rep. Justine Fox-Young. ALBUQUERQUE—Nobody thought Karen Giannini was going to win. Not local political junkies (like us at NMI) watching tight races on election night; not her new Democratic colleagues in the state home of Representatives; and certainly not her incumbent opponent, Rep. Justine Fox-Young, who was sitting in what everyone considered a safe Republican seat. But somehow this Air Force veteran and divorced mom of three defied every odds

CNN Hero of the Year - Nov. 20 last day to vote

CNN Hero of the Year - Nov. 20 last day to vote November 19th, 2008 Dear Friends of Ethiopia Reads, It is my great honor to be named a CNN Hero of the Year, especially among such a wonderful group of people working difficult to make a difference in the world. This nomination has led new friends to discover the work of Ethiopia Reads, and it is deeply gratifying to know that so many want to help us bring books to the kids of Ethiopia. I truly believe that literacy is the key to unlocking t

UFC.com BJ Penn vs. St. Pierre

UFC® 94: St-Pierre vs. Penn 2 Press Conference At the kickoff press conference in Las Vegas last Saturday to officially announce his January 31st rematch with UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn, the organization’s welterweight king, Georges St-Pierre, called his two losses to Matt Hughes and Matt Serra the “great turning points” in his career. I beg to differ. For me, and for many other mixed martial arts fans, the day Georges St-Pierre went from athlete to fighter was the last time he steppe

Albuquerque Public Schools board resists order to grow

ALBUQUERQUE — Remember Constitutional Amendment 1, passed by voters statewide on Election Day? It’s the amendment that increases the number of school board members from seven to nine and also allows school board elections to be conducted by mail-in ballot — but only for school districts that have more than 200,000 residents. This means the statewide amendment — which passed Nov. 4 — actually only pertains to Albuquerque. But while the amendment was approved statewide, in Bernalillo County th

Wait... what? Obama won part of Utah?

By Michael J.W. Stickings There may be no state in the Union that is more Republican than Utah, but, with the counting of provisional and absentee ballots now completed, it looks like Obama actually won Salt Lake County, the state's most populous. He won by only 296 votes (or "less than one-tenth of 1 percent"), but still: It is a huge step for us," said [state Democratic Party] Chairman Wayne Holland. He has studied the major strides Democrats have made in surrounding western states like Co

Back to basics for city politics

The GOP must have forgotten to turn off the Republican dirty mouth machine when the presidential election was over. Newt Gingrich, for instance, has once again emitted a stream of political filth, this time claiming that the folks who have been bashed, scapegoated, ostracized and even murdered for being homosexuals have suddenly managed to create “a gay and secular fascism in this country.” He continued “I think this is a very dangerous threat to anybody who believes in traditional religion.”

UFO Reports: Evidence of Green Fireballs and the start of Project Twinkle

At exactly midnight on September 18, 1954, my telephone rang. It was Jim Phalen, a pal of mine from the Long Beach Press-Telegram, and he had a "good flying saucer report," hot off the wires. He read it to me. The guide line was: "Thousands of people saw a huge fireball light up dark New Mexico skies tonight." The story went on to tell about how a "blinding green" fireball the size of a full moon had silently streaked southeast across Colorado and northern New Mexico at eight-forty that night

Arizonan will head Homeland Security

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) has been chosen to be secretary of the vast and troubled Department of Homeland Security for President-elect Obama, Democratic officials said. Napolitano is a border governor who will now be responsible for immigration policy and border security, which is part of Homeland Security’s myriad functions. Napolitano (na-pawl-i-TAW-noh) brings law-and-order experience from her stint as the Grand Canyon State’s first female attorney general. One of the nation’s most

TODAY’S TOP STORIES: Elephant sex! (Yes, it’s a slow news day, folks)

In national news, Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens appears to have lost his race to Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich tardy yesterday, Hillary Clinton may not accept the secretary of state job if offered, and in economic news, energy prices have fallen dramatically over the last month (8.6 percent), while food prices rose by almost as much. As The Washington Post points out, we’re looking at a period of deflation here. Meanwhile, America’s first black president seems ready to appoint the country’s first black

I’ve included the text at the end of this post. It offers a compelling window into Martin’s way of seeing the world. Martin is a quirky but powerful presence in contemporary American art. She was one of several extremely talented women arti

Your Customers Are Still Out There.

“…Paco Underhill, the retailing expert, tells me that 20 percent of the mall storefronts could soon be empty. That fact alone means that thousands of service-economy workers will experience the self-doubt that goes with unemployment.” - From David Brooks’ column, The Formerly Middle Class Personally, I think it’s great that we Americans have finally (maybe) realized we have to - gasp - live within our means. But, when 70% of the economy is based on consumer spending, we’re in for some rough t
